Correct white balance for overcast days

When using AWB or daylight settings on my 40D on overcast days or at high altitude, my pictures come out too cool.  Using the "shade" setting, however, renders my pictures too warm/golden.  Any recommendations for a white balance setting for overcast or high altitude scenes where there is too much blue light?.

Several options:

• Shoot RAW, then tweak white balance in DPP
• Try "cloudy". Results should be warmer than "sunny" but cooler than "shade"
• Do a custom white balance using a grey or white card (i.e. anything neutral)

The custom white balance is probably the best bet if you don't want to shoot RAW files.
