I don't have a Rebel, but on many Canon DLSRs you can switch the USB protocol between "PTP" and "Normal" communication mode via a menu setting. "PTP" is nominally Printer Transfer Protocol, though I've seen reports of people using it when remotely connecting to the camera from a PC. It's possible that if you have the wrong protocol set you may not get proper communication, so whatever it's set to now, try the other setting!

Which Rebel? I don't believe my XT can be used that way. In any case, you need to use Canon's EOS Capture to do it.

thanks to both of you for your replies.....i changed the protocol setting and was able to take photos without the "busy" message, however, there is still no indication from my laptop that any photos are being taken....where can i find the "canon capture" software?....perhaps this is the missing link.....regards

On the CD you got with your camera, or the Canon website.
