I haven't been keeping up with Lightroom versions because I don't like the changes they made for v4, so I'm wondering if it's likely that support for the new .CR2 format will be made available for 2.7.
The alternative is the ghastly DPP!

I shouldn't think so. Adobe's default policy seem to be to force you to upgrade to get support for the latest camera releases.
DPP is just fine as a RAW converter. It's not intended to be an image editor (though it has crop and rotate, plus global color, intensity, saturation etc. adjustments)

One of the problems I have with DPP is that I can't find a way to reset the defaults to stop it from applying all kinds of adjustments to my RAW files. It can be changed frame-by-frame, but that sucks for downloads of several hundred files and I *never* want any "black box" program to automatically apply adjustments to my images (for sharpening I use Focus Magic and for noise reduction I use Neat Image, all other changes are done in Lightroom 2.7 or Photoshop 6). I know others do things differently, but I'm not interested in learning a whole new program for the simple things I do or spending the money on new programs or upgrades.
The adjustments DPP chooses seem to be appropriate for making out-of-camera JPEGs, but I make exhibition prints that are quite different from what comes out of the camera. Lightroom 2.7 is better for me and, if I have to upgrade version 4, that I also have, just to get the new .CR2 format, I'll be pissed at Adobe again (for what they did in v3 and later) and there's only so much of this profiteering manipulation that I can take before looking elsewhere.

DPP applies whatever JPEG settings you have set in the camera by default. If you don't want any adjustments applied you can either set all your JPEG settings (sharpness, contrast, saturation etc.) to "normal" or you can use DPPs "Recipe" files which can be applied to any or all images. Recipes contain all the adjustment data from the Tool Palette and so you can set everything (NR, Lens corrections, RAW corrections etc.) to "off" or "0".

Guess you have to convert CR2 files to DNG. Then you can import to Lightroom 2.7. Newer versions have more options and better rendering algorithms but then it is the never ending upgrade cycle.... |
