I'd put a 2CR5 in the body without the booster attached, just to make sure the body works.

If it does, check the batteries in the E1 booster are good, and if they are it suggests a problem with the E1 or the connections between the E1 and the body.

If you can't find one on Ebay, you might actually try Canon.

I think the GR-E1 and GR-E2 are interchangable and the GR-E2 is the grip for the EOS-1v, which is still in production. I'd give them a call on 1-800-828-4040 and see what they say. There's a good chance they'll be able to sell you one or the other.

Beware that the GR-E2 grip is quite expensive, and difficult to find.  It's somewhere in the neighborhood of $130 new.  I ended up buying a second used EOS 1n body for the GR-E1 grip, as together they were not much more than the new grip alone.

I found this in a post from may last year in photo.net

Quote
Canon Parts is selling GR-E1 part #CG1-0502-000 for $57.00 and GR-E2 part #CG1-3760-000 for $30.00 which is almost half the price of the GR-E1.

I don't know if that info is accurate (seems cheap!), but the part numbers may be useful. Here's a useful link for grip information:
