Plus-Sized 35mm full-frame sensor?
« on: February 20, 2009, 10:02:51 AM »

Bob,

Back in September 2008 you responded to a post that you didn't think Canon would enter the medium format market for various reasons. And it reminded me of a question along those lines that I haven't read about before.

What about a plus-sized full frame camera, one that is 36mm x 36mm? Although the body would probably be a little larger than the standard 35mm body to accomodate larger mirrors, viewfinder, AF system and other optical body components, it could use the same lenses. It would elimnate the need to be rotated and would increase the vertical field of view, openning up more options for composition, for example, providing a nice aspect ratio for weddings and portraits, similar to that of medium format. With a software feature it could automatically add 2:3 (or 4:5) frame markers in the viewfinder and perform in-camera crops of images down to the 2:3 (or 4:5) aspect if prefered for some photo applications.

Have you heard of something like this?

It couldn't use the same lenses. For a square format, the largest sensor you can use would be 30mm x 30mm. 35 mm lenses have a 43mm image circle, so whatever format you pick has to fit inside that 43mm circle.

You could make a 30mm x 30mm format DSLR, but I doubt there'd be much of a market for it.

Thanks. If I had only drawn a diagram out on paper instead of in my head I would have quickly seen that.
