Cable for Canon 1d
« on: March 21, 2009, 09:37:27 AM »

The yearbook guy is back. I have bought a used 1d on EBay to see what the full-frame is like. But it did not come with the cables that connect the 1d to my computer so I can download the photos.

Does anyone know exactly which cables I need and a good source for them?

Meanwhile, the XTi and the 50mm 1.8 are taking great candids around school. The 70-300 is taking fine pics at the track practice this month--when it isn't snowing too hard to be outside. WY is fun to take pictures in.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Mitch

I'd get a card reader. It's faster and less trouble than a direct connection. I think the 1D only has a Firewire port, so you'd need a Firewire cable and a computer with a Firewire port also.

Adorama do seem to sell the cable - http://www.adorama.com/Refby.tpl?refby=rflAID012417&sku=ICAIFC200D6 but the picture they have on their website is wrong. I suspect they sell the right cable and have simply put the wrong picture up.

Personally I use a Sandisk High Speed Card Reader to transfer my images. It's very fast and has worked without a hitch. If will also work with the CF card from your XTi

Take a look at this article for more about card readers and some suggestions about what to get http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/sandisk_compact_flash_card_readers.html

Thanks a lot. The card reader makes sense.

PS  I found my card reader and used it tonight. I had taken the 1d down to the river today with the Canon 70-300mm IS. Big mistake. I will never use my XTi again out of doors. I took a picture of an owl about 40 yards away in a clump of limbs, handheld. Perfect focus, the colors of the owl separate from the tree limbs better than any picture I have ever taken.
