Does a large capacity cf card work in my Eos 5D
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:16:57 PM »

I just took a look at the topic about memory cards and wondered if anyone has tried the large capacity cards in their cameras specifically the Eos 5D. I have this camera and have started using the raw format and video and the 4gb card I use now fills up rapidly. I was thinking of trying a 16gb memory card but I'm not sure if my camera will be compatible with this. I found some at ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PhotoFast-16GB-CF-533x-HiSpeed-UDMA-Compact-Flash-Card_W0QQitemZ120482004856QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Memory_Cards?hash=item1c0d497f78. I have a 4gb of this brand but I can't find any info on compatibility with the larger cards. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I believe a 16GB card should be OK, but I've not used one myself. I do use a SanDisk Ultra III 8GB card in my 5D and I've had no problems.

The 5D (original, MkI) doesn't have UDMA support and won't be able to take advantage of ultra fast cards, so there's no real need to pay extra for "state of the art" CF cards

Hi Susy,

even if your camera does support large capacity cards,  I would still recommend getting smaller cards.  Surely they fill up quickly and you will have to live with the hassle of carrying a few around and changing them constantly, but the advantage is that should one card go bad, you will lose fewer pictures than you would with larger capacity card

I see the question is really for the 5DMk2.  For my 5DMk2 I have a 16 GB Transcend 300x UMDA card  and it works fine.
