Hi Any disadvantage of Canon 40D with lens canon 100mm/2.8 , shooting of insects. tripod and flashlight

No, the 40D should be fine with the 100/2.8 macro.

Longer macros allow the camera/lens to be further away from subject.

For me it's not whether 100mm will work or not because it will. But I prefer the longer focal lengths because when auto focusing I have noted different critters, including insects, sometimes react to the focusing motor noise and leave the scene or get out of position so I have to refocus. The further away the less problems I've had.

The Tokina 100/2.8 macro is about 300 $ and pretty good. George

Finally I made decision to buy used one, it really cut expenses and give me bigger list of choose. Any of you want, dissuade not buy used one, camera?

Used is fine if you can find one in good condition from a reputable seller and you don't mind buying a lens without a warranty. The Tamron macro comes with a 6 year factory warranty, which is a really good deal. The Canon lenses come with a 1 year warranty.
