No, the 40D should be fine with the 100/2.8 macro.

Longer macros allow the camera/lens to be further away from subject.

For me it's not whether 100mm will work or not because it will.  But I prefer the longer focal lengths because when auto focusing I have noted different critters, including insects, sometimes react to the focusing motor noise and leave the scene or get out of position so I have to refocus. The further away the less problems I've had.

Long lens - bigger price. I'm looking  budget.

The Tokina 100/2.8 macro is about 300 $ and pretty good.

If you're looking to minimize cost, the Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP 1:1 Macro is a very good lens. It's around $130 less expensive than the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM.

I've never looked at the Tokina 100/2.8 macro, but it's currently selling for about $400 rather than $300

If you don't intend to go full frame, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM is a very good buy and there's a $30 instant rebate on it until January 16th (2010).

Finally I made decision to buy  used one, it  really cut  expenses  and give me bigger list of choose.
Any of you want,   dissuade   not  buy used one, camera?

Used is fine if you can find one in good condition from a reputable seller and you don't mind buying a lens without a warranty. The Tamron macro comes with a 6 year factory warranty, which is a really good deal. The Canon lenses come with a 1 year warranty.
