Canon 580 and Quantum Battery
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:52:16 PM »

Hi Bob,

Is the Canon 580 Flash compatible with the Quantum turbo battery?

Also what might cause a 580 to not be able to go into E-TTL mode?
The flash unit stays in TTL mode and high speed flash and compensation cannot be activated.

Regards,

Marc

Well, quantum do make Turbo batteries which are compatible with the 580EX. You can check compatibility on their website - http://www.qtm.com/?page=3110&qmode=c

I'm really no expert on the 580EX. Not being able to get E-TTL and only getting TTL would happen if the flash was mounted on an older film body for example. I'm not sure what could cause that if it's mounted on a DSLR. I think they all support E-TTL

According to what I remember Canon sttates all EX flashes are E-TTL compatable.  What camera are you using it on?

I'm using the 580 on a 7D.  I also tried the 580 by itself and it would not go into E-TTL.

I took the flash into Canon today and will advise what they found and did.

Apparently key electrical components are being replaced.  I Will find out more when I pick the unit up from service.
