Las Vegas Nights and Grand Canyon - Best Lens under $400 for site
« on: June 08, 2009, 02:28:02 PM »

Hello all,

I'm heading to Vegas and Grand Canyon and was trying to get some expert opinions on which one lens would best be purchased under $400.00 would produce the best results?

I'm taking with me a Canon 50D and kit lens ( the 28-135mm). I am not going to have room for a tripod so I was thinking a fast lens such as the 50mm 1.4 might work best or even the least expensive 50mm 1.8.

Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If I was going to the Grand Canyon, I'd want something wider than a 28mm on a 50D.

There's the EF-S 10-22, though it's now well over $700. However the new Tamron 10-24/3.5-4.5 is only just over $400 and would go well with the 28-135. You probably would not miss the 25-27mm range!

The EF 50/1.8 II is always a good lens to have for low light work. The price has been rising on that one, but you can still get it for under $100.

If you don't get a wide angle lens, at least learn what tools you have for photostitching and practice at home.  For merging wide panoramas, keep the camera in manual mode and forgo the polarizer.

If you can spend just a few hundred more, I recommend the EF 17-40mm Ultra Wide.  Excellent wide angle lens for sharp landscape shots.  You can get  super panorama shots on your trip of the Strip and the Canyon.  Chose a high vantage point and add some artistic qualities with your photo editing software.
