5D2 Live View/flash problem.
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:23:30 PM »

For some reason, when I have Live View on with 5D2, it won't trigger flash. I tried using both PC and hot shoe and it doesn't work with any flash unit (I tried both ETTL and manual modes). It used to work, but not anymore. When Live View is off, flash works fine.

Any idea how to fix this problem?

I seem to recall that there are some flash issues related to Live View, but I'm not 100% sure what they all are!. For example I don't think you can use high speed sync in Live mode. Is the flash set to high speed sync by any chance? Is the indicated shutter speed faster than the max sync speed?

I think there can also be problems with Flash in Live View mode when Silent Shooting is enabled so make sure it's disabled.

Your question caught my interest as I have a 5DMk2 and thought I would explore various camera settings using flash and live view. I have not been able to duplicate what is happening to you using two of my hot shoe flash heads ( Speedlite 430 EX and 580 EX2). Both fire in live view using many settings including the Silent modes that Bob mentioned.  I didn't try hi- speed sync as I figure that makes sense to avoid. You didn't say whether your flash was a Canon unit. I'm leary of third party anything when it comes to intergration of all intended operability. Even Canon messes up. Yesterday I downloaded the new (mostly movie) update for the 5DMk2 and today the word is Canon has a glitch in it to resolve. The new 5D2 manual increased in size by some 30 or more pages !
