Hello everyone!
I've just joined because after a pretty long time of researching which telephoto lens would be best for my XSi, I can say I'm now more undecided than when I started!! So, I come to try retrieve some experience and wisdom from here. My budget isn't that large, since I'm still a student and also not sure if I should invest so much in lenses for this camera or upgrade the camera itself. Since I want to learn I thought this would be a good camera to start with and now I'd like to purchase the telephoto lens.. unless you guide me towards a different direction. I greatly appreciate all your advice in advance.

It's difficult to know what's "best" without some idea of your budget but assuming you want to spend less on the lens than you did on the camera I'd have two suggestions. First the EF-S 55-250/4-5.6IS. It's probably the lowest cost telephoto zoom that I'd recommend for the XSi. Image quality is decent, IS is good. If you can afford a little more than I'd go for the EF 70-300/4-5.6IS. It has more reach, full frame coverage, less vignetting (on a crop sensor camera) and both the optics and IS system are good. |

Hello Bob, first of all thanks for creating this great site and for replying so promptly.. I have been considering buying the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR DI VC (this one because of the wide range..since I'm yet not very comfortable with exchanging lenses for different uses..)

The "6.3" part on the Tamron might give you some trouble. You will need a lot of light at 300 mm, especially since you will have to shoot faster than 1/100 s to keep things sharp. Also, the Autofocus on the XSi might not work at a 6.3 aperture.
I have the 70 - 300 and it has proven to be an excellent lens.

Keith, thanks so much for that imput.. so I guess the best option is the canon 70-300  I'll go ahead and purchase it and if you guys have any advice or tips on using the new lens, I'll be forever thankful. Thanks again! David |

Hello again, guys.. Just wanted to stop by and let you know I purchased the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM with a B &W 58mm UV-Haze filter and a lens hood.. all together for $540.00.. I thought I was a very good deal.. (hope I'm right!) But anyways, I wanted to thank you for your advice, and to Bob, thanks again for the site, and you have just gained a new follower Thanks and talk to you guys soon, David |
