Custom Functions and My Menu
« on: December 01, 2011, 10:47:26 AM »

I have a new T3i on the way (yay!) so I thought I would pose the quesiton:
Which Custom functions do you always set and leave at a different setting as soon as you get a new camera?
What functions do you put on MyMenu?

As opposed to say, mirror lockup, which is just used as needed?

As a bonus, the Canon Learning center has a post about photographng holiday lights:

HTP and ALO is always on. So is high iso noise reduction.

I like the little extra headroom I get from HTP. Noise in the shadows? Not at all. Cant see it in prints. It is probably there if I am looking :-)

ALO is set to strong. ALO is something that i sometimes find very useful and sometimes just annoying. It is unpredictable. That is why I shoot RAW+JPEG. But I get that little extra shadow lift and together with a little more headroom from HTP it increases overall DR. If all goes well no need for much PP.

High Iso NR is always set to Low. It only affects chroma noise so it is safe.

Thanks.  On the T3i at least HTP disables ALO.  According to the manual:

"With Setting 1 [HTP enabled] the Auto Lighting Optimiser is automatically set to [Disable] and the setting cannot be changed."

That's right. On some models you can use only one of the functions at the time. I don't know why. Maybe Bob knows? On the 50D I can use both at the same time. On the 7D you can also use both in manual mode I think.

I have way to many custom functions. Actually I should spend more time reading the user manual. I know I can assign certain functions to certain buttons and customise the camera the way I like it but I never take the time to do so.

From what I read the T3i is a great little camera. The Rebel series is a little to small for my hands and the viewfinder is narrow but you get a lot for the money.

One I am sure to set is the function to disable "disco flash" autofocus.  I hate that!
