Exposure Time Limitations on a Canon 40D

I have been unsuccessful in capturing iridium flares at night because the timing requires longer exposures to successfully bracket the passing of the satelite.  It seems 30 seconds is all that's provided by my Canon 40D.  Is there any way around this?  Persons I know that have been successful use 2 minute exposures.

The solution is to use a locking remote release and bulb mode.

If you want to set a given long exposure time, you can use something like the Satechi TR-A Timer Remote
