Canon presentation - hints about new cameras?
« on: May 07, 2012, 02:13:16 PM »

That`s a tough question, Bob. Use the G1X sensor and build new lenses or use one of the latest APS-C sensors and use existing lenses?

A new interchangeable lens system is going to cost....but I can not see Canon coming up with something else. They need a small MILC camera and small lenses. Nikon did it with the 1-series.

My take: A completely new system using the G1X sensor.

If I am wrong I will buy my neighbour a cup of coffe and some waffles!

Canon want to sell more lenses. As long as the sensor is APS-C or smaller (which is 99.9999% likely to be the case), existing lenses will no doubt be able to be mounted via an adapter, but the real goal will be to sell lenses specially designed for a new camera.

Any MILC will have a shorter back focus distance than the EOS system (44mm), so even if they used an APS-C sensor, they'd still need to bring out a line of new lenses to make the system as small and compact as possible.

"A new interchangeable lens system is going to cost." - Exactly. That's what Canon is in business for, to sell you as much new stuff as they can. The same applies to Sony, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus etc. of course.
