Title: help!! Post by: maegirl on November 08, 2008, 09:37:39 AM I'm a newbie to dSLRs. I recently purchased the Canon 40D w/ Canon 17-55 f/2.8 USM IS lens. I'm frustrated because I thought this was supposed to be a good set-up however, I've been getting a blotch of black on the bottom of my pictures? I tried it out yesterday and the blotch of black only comes out when I have the lens open at its widest or if I don't zoom in. Here are some sample pictures....

Post by: Bob Atkins on November 08, 2008, 12:20:00 PM Looks to me like a shadow caused by the lens getting in the way of the light from the flash. This will happen with the built in flash if you use a lens that is too big/long. The solution is to use a speedite in the flash hotshoe, or to use a smaller lens (e.g. the 18-55/3.5-5.6), or to use longer focal length settings so that your subject can be further from the camera. It can also happen if you have the lens hood mounted and use the buit in flash.

I agree with Bob's observation. Happened to me before during daylight as I was using pop-up flash as fill in flash. if you really like using flash, then get a 430EX or 580EX to avoid that situation. i have used a 70-300 IS (with hood on) and the 430EX and the results came out alright. Cheers |
