Title: Ok, lens suggestion
Post by: jamisan on November 20, 2008, 11:18:46 AM
I have the 18-55 and the 28-135 now. I would like to have more telephoto, not a prime. Would like to have USM and IS, do not want the front element to rotate. Would like to keep price under $500. What lens?

There are none :-(

Your best best is the Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6IS USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007Y794O/bobatkinsphotogr), though the front element rotates and the USM isn't a ring USM. With the current $50 "instant rebate" it's also under $500. I have one myself and it's a very good lens (which is why I chose it!). I don't find the rotating front element a big deal.

Cheaper would be the Canon EF-S 55-250/4-5.6IS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0011NVMO8/bobatkinsphotogr), but the front rotates and it's not USM at all

The Canon EF 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004XOND/bobatkinsphotogr) has everything you want - except for IS.

That's about it. There aren't even any 3rd party lenses. Sigma have HSM (which is similar to USM) and OS (which is similar to IS), but not both in a telephoto zoom or a lens under $500.

I have the 70 - 300 and have never had a problem with the front element rotating.  I don't see that a polarizer or gradient ND filter is the kind of thing that you put on a telephoto zoom.

I really like mine - it has taken great photos in tough situations, and the IS is like magic - the image in the viewfinder locks in like it has radar.

Thanks guys. Bob, I pretty much figured no such animal existed what the heck,it never hurts to ask.
Keith, your right on that you probably wont be putting those types of filters on a long zoom. I have the 28-135 so if I decide on filters that will be the one. I will probably go with the 70-300 after the advise here and reviews I have read sounds like a good one for my budget.

Nice choice on the 70-300 IS.
