Title: Lens suggestions
Post by: lacasaturner on February 26, 2009, 01:22:32 PM
I currently own the Canon Rebel Xsi, along with two lenses: 75-300 mm zoom and an 18-55mm lens. I take wedding photos, portraits, etc. and have loved the results, but wish to upgrade my camera. I am thinking of purchasing the EOS 50D. I am not very well-versed on the technical side of my camera (I'm getting better) so I was wondering if someone could help me in suggesting which lens I should purchase for the 50D. Will my lenses be fine that came with the Rebel? I am on a budget, but would rather save and purchase a good lens, that buy a couple of cheaper ones. Would someone mind giving me some suggestions? Thank you

Please don't use that color scheme!  It has no contrast on the light grey default background.  I had to highlight your text to read it.

You should be able to use your existing lenses on the 50D, but you might want to upgrade the mid-range zoom.  You might also want to get the EF 50/1.8 - the wider aperature will give you more control over depth of field for portraits.

Thank you for your suggestions--and I am sorry about the colors--they don't show up on my computer! You suggested a mid-range--what would that be in a lens?

I edited the original post to remove the colors!

You might consider the 50D + 28-135/3.5-5.6IS kit (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001EQ4BY0/bobatkinsphotogr). You save about $200 over buying them seperately. The 28-135IS isn't a bad lens at all and it covers the normal to telephoto range on a 50D. The advantage over what you have would be faster focus with a ring USM motor and the fact that you don't have to switch lenses when you cross the 55mm focal length.

To get a much better lens will probably cost you close to $1000 with something like the EF 24-105/4L IS USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AZ57M6/bobatkinsphotogr). If you're on a budget, the 28-135IS might be more realistic (works out to about $200 in the kit).
