Title: Surf photography Post by: Regnis on May 31, 2009, 05:03:03 AM Hello again,
I am keen surfer and am looking at getting into surf photography. I am thinking of getting the 70-200mm L4 lense and was just wondering if this would give me enough reach from the beach? I am just a uni student so i don't have alot of cash to spend at the moment. they are around $800 (US) brand new here. Was also wondering if anyone has any tips on surf photography ??( i know this is a broad question) Regnis Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: photosbybrian on August 03, 2009, 12:21:33 PM Which camera? Crop factor makes a big difference. Also, how far from the beach are your subjects?

I have the 40d. I ended up buying the 70-200/f4. however I have been having some issues since i bought it. I'm not sure whether it is a focussing problem or just through my own fault but many of my images of moving objects are coming out blurry. Are you using a tripod? Without IS, the rule of thumb is that you should be shooting at 1/fl of the lens. (With your 40d, that should be the 35 mm equivalent, so with a 200 * 1.6 = 320 mm-eq lens you should have a shutter speed of 1/250 or faster. Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: photosbybrian on August 04, 2009, 09:52:36 AM Are you using "AI Servo" mode for auto focus? Try that and select a single focus point that you can spot on a particular thing, IE surfer's face as you track accross the surface of the water.
Can you show some samples? BRB Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: Regnis on August 05, 2009, 03:00:39 AM Thanks for the help guys,
How do i go about posting pics on here? (i am guessing i just use the insert image button) do i need to reduce the file size first?? I will put some examples up of the problems i have been encountering Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: photosbybrian on August 11, 2009, 09:22:16 AM You probably want to resize so that is less than 1000 px on the long side for posting here. I'd like to see some of your shots. Where are you from?
Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: Regnis on August 11, 2009, 05:48:20 PM I think I may have worked out what the problem was. It was my filter! Since taking it off my images have been perfectly sharp. The guy who I got the lense off gave me the filter with it. It is just a generic filter. Has anyone encountered this problem before??
Brian, I am from the North Coast of NSW, Aus Title: Re: Surf photography Post by: photosbybrian on August 13, 2009, 08:53:39 AM Not specifically, was it just a UV filter? Cheap filters can scratch easily if not cleaned VERY carefully. Then they get like an old pair of eyeglasses with kind of a hazy finish to them. You're probably better off without it anyway, or pick-up a new one if you want to protect your lense from the beach elements.
Do you have your shots posted somewhere? I'd like to see them. - I love the ocean even though I don't get there often. BRB |
