Title: Rebel XSI vs Canon 40D
Post by: bsnooopy on June 11, 2008, 05:56:39 PM
Approximately 2 years ago I purchased my first SLR a Rebel XT.  I now would like to upgrade and after much research still looking for opinions on whether I should purchase the new Rebel XSI or the Canon 40D.  The 40D got my attention with its higher ISO and faster shooting.  The 40D right now is at a great price but would appreciate any feedback on these 2 cameras.  I primarily like to spend time shooting landscape and wildlife.

I think I'd personally go for the EOS 40D. It has a faster frame rate for action shooting, it has an ISO 3200 setting for low light work, it has slighly lower image noise - plus it uses the same CF memory cards that your XT does. The added size and weight and the "smoother" operation give it a more professional feel (though professional feel can't be seen in the images!).

The XSi is also a very good camera, expecially if you want something smaller, lighter and cheaper. If that's what you need than I'd have no trouble at all recommending it.

I compared the XTi, XSi and EOS 40D in this article:

Since the EOS 40D (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000V5P90K/bobatkinsphotogr) selling for $940 (after $200 instant reabate) and the Digital Rebel XSi (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0012Y88QQ/bobatkinsphotogr) is selling for around $760, I think the EOS 40D is the better deal.

If you also need a lens, the 40D kit with the 28-135IS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000V5QV4S/bobatkinsphotogr) and the XSi kit with the 18-55IS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0012YA85A/bobatkinsphotogr) both offer pretty good savings on the lens too.

I agree with Bob's recommendation. The 40D is definitely a worthy upgrade. Though the XSi is a great camera, I think you will like the jump from XT to 40D a whole lot better than XT to XSi.
If you don't already have it, the 28-135 is a very good lens that come with the 40D kit and a good way to $ave!

I want to say thanks to both of you for the recommendation.  That settles my ongoing seasaw battle of which camera to purchase.  I already own the Canon 28-135 lense which I use all the time.   It is an excellent all around lense.  By the way I bought this lense because of a recommendation I read right here on this web site.

Thanks again for the advice.
