Title: !.4X Extender recommendations: Canon or Kenko or Sigma ? Post by: nycandre on July 30, 2009, 03:56:30 AM I'm considering these to use with a 5D (or maybe 20D or good old film body) - considering I also have the following lenses, Sigma 70-200, Canon 100-400, and Canon 85 1.8 - which are best, price being somewhat of a consideration ?
OK - never mind - Canon is fine, better IQ according to BobAtkins - though it doesnt work with Sigma - not a problem here - and the price diff is negligible..$100 or so - don't know if it would work with the 85 1.8 .. will find out at B&H I guess ;-) Title: Re: !.4X Extender recommendations: Canon or Kenko or Sigma ? Not a problem for me (with the Canon) as I use other lenses instead of considering the 1.4X with the 85.

I have a Tamron 1.4x which I use with lenses that won't take my Canon 1.4x. I've been pretty happy with it. Take a look at http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/tc3.html for some comments and image samples. Title: Re: !.4X Extender recommendations: Canon or Kenko or Sigma ? Post by: nycandre on August 01, 2009, 02:10:36 PM Ah - thanks for the reminder about the excellent review and practical conclusions - so yep, should get the Canon 1.4X for my L long zoom 100-400 (and future 300 :_)
Now probably not worth getting the 1.4 Tamron/ Kenko considering I have the Sigma 70-200 that would cover that 120mm from my 85 1.8 - though I would bet the 85 + 1.4 combo would be better.. Title: Re: !.4X Extender recommendations: Canon or Kenko or Sigma ? Post by: SidSP on August 11, 2009, 06:33:53 AM I've used all three. I can see absolutely no difference between the Kenko 1.4X 300 Pro and the much more expensive Canon. I sold the others and kept the Kenko. I use it primarily on my 70-200mm f/4 L and my 100-400mm L. In good light, with pins taped, it autofocuses reasonably well with the 100-400 even @ 400mm. When traveling, I even use it with my my 24-105 to get a bit of extra reach.
Hope this helps. |
