Title: 7D Flash Control
Post by: Roxie2401 on September 09, 2009, 06:09:53 PM
Do I understand correctly that the 7D uses "visual light" (short burst from the pop-up flash) to control the SpeedLight units?

If that is correct, would it be possible to include that in a firmware upgrade to the 30D, 40D, 50D, Rebel XTi, etc. family of bodies?  I'm assuming there are some menu changes, too, to set the number of flash units and groups, etc.

But, this sure would put "us" on a level with the Nikon family and not require additional hardware.

I's guess that it's possible, but it won't happen. Canon don't update firmware for discontinued bodies (which rules out the 20D/30D/40D ) and they need to give you a reason to upgrade from current ones (like the 50D, T1i etc.).

I wouldn't be surprised to see wireless flash control built into the 60D when it's announced (sometime in 2010 maybe) but I'd be very surprised if they issued new firmware for the 50D.
