Title: Repair Conundrum Post by: KeithB on September 10, 2009, 10:59:10 AM I have my Rebel XT (8 MP) in for repair at Canon. It has an estimated cost of $220 or so. Because I am a loyal customer or something, they are offering me a refurbished XS for $359 in lieu of the repair. (They also offered a 50 D for about $600 but I like the smaller footprint of the rebel.)
Is this a good deal? If the XS does *not* include the kit lens it almost certainly isn't a great deal, since I can get a new XS + lens for about $600 and the lens for $160 - that puts the cost of a new body at about $440 If it includes the lens it is a pretty good deal. Anyway, I know the extra MegaPixels are not that important, but I like the larger LCD and Live view and other stuff. Any suggestions? Title: Re: Repair Conundrum Post by: Bob Atkins on September 10, 2009, 01:22:52 PM I'd agree that a 50D for $600 is pretty good. They're currently selling new for around $1100, so they're giving you $500 for a broken XT. Eve if it's a refurbished 50D, it's still a pretty good deal.
A new XS with lens is about $530 and you can get a refurb with lens for $430. A refurb body for $360 isn't really a great deal. If they throw in the 18-55 IS, it's not bad though. If you don't use it you could resell it for $895 and buy any Rebel you want.

The SX *does* include the lens, so it is a pretty good deal. The only bummers in the thing: I will have to get a card reader to pull my images off of my now useless CF cards. I did not improve ISO sensitivity - but I bet I have better performance at 1600 which means I can use Ken Rockwell's "Digital Pushing" technique. The SX does not use my IR remote, so that is going to be useless to me... ETA: Another Bummer, I don't think my version of iPhoto and OSX 10.4.11 will be able to handle XS RAW files. Also, make sure the "XS" body is the color you want. I'm personally down on the silver/gray color that Canon offers in Rebel models..That alone would turn me away.

I really think you will like the XS, I have had mine for about 10 months,have taken over 9000 pics, and am very happy with it. The software, IE DPP, that comes with the XS (you might ask Canon if the refurb XS comes with all the software) is pretty dang good for post proccessing RAW. And,the "Live View" is good for setting up a tripod shot, but really not so good for taking a "normal" pic. I got the XS and the refurbished kit had *everything*: lens, disks, manuals..., even a 16MB CF card - which will store about 5 pictures 8^). (The new camera does not come with any card at all.) So far everything is working fine. Canon repair is too efficient! They had already fixed my old camera and sent it back before I could take advantage of the deal! So I am untangling that part of the mess, too. |
