Title: Canon MF lens/Leica R lens for digital body?
Post by: DNA on June 18, 2008, 11:29:38 PM
Hello All
I am considering to buy Canon MF lens and Leica R lens for digital eos. But I need your advice for finding right adapter. Which adapter provide AF indicator in Digital Eos? Finally, are you satisfied with Canon MF lens or Leica R lens in case of using digital body?
I remember Bob explained to use adapter for digital eos. But I want to hear from someone who used the adapter and so on.

I recall Bob mentioning that the Canon FD lens flange is shallower than the Canon EOS mount, requiring an adapter that would degrade the optical quality.  For most purposes, the AF of the EOS mount lenses outweighs any benefit of using an FD lens.

In the days of film, I used Carl Zeiss lenses for the Contax mount.  I bought the HappypageHK AF confirm adapter from eBay and compared the CZ 50 1.4 to the Canon 50 1.8.  The two were equivalent in sharpness with the CZ having a bit cooler color temp.  In the days of film, people talked about how certain lenses had certain "drawing characteristics".  In my opinion, the advent of digital photography and post processing somewhat negates these seemingly intangible qualities.

The build quality of the Summicrons and Elmarits is superior to most Canon primes.  However, the difference in optical quality is not as obvious.  If you have a collection Leica R lenses, then an adapter from HappypageHK or Haoda can supplement your AF collection.  However, I would not recommend buying a set of Leica R lenses right now, as the hassles of manual focus and stop down metering are not worth the incremental differences in image quality.
