Title: 7D mRAW vs 40D
Post by: mike_tee_vee on November 22, 2009, 02:33:32 PM
Bob,

Excellent review of the 7D.  It's nice to see real world examples.

How does the mRAW output of the 7D compare to the 40D in terms of noise and sharpness?  The output resolutions are roughly equal, so would the 7D appear sharper as more input pixels are being use to form each output pixel?

That's an interesting question and something I didn't try. I no longer have the 7D, so I can't do more tests :-(

I don't think the 7D mRAW image would be sharper.  If you have a native 10MP image and a 10MP image that's downsized from 100MP, assuming a good lens is used and that the down sampling  algorithm is optimized, they probably show very similar resolution.

It is possible that noise could be reduced slightly by lowering resolution if some sort of pixel averaging is done.
