Title: macro with canon40D Post by: Drizd on January 09, 2010, 09:43:56 AM Hi
Any disadvantage of Canon 40D with lens canon 100mm/2.8 , shooting of insects. tripod and flashlight Title: Re: macro with canon40D Post by: Bob Atkins on January 09, 2010, 10:34:42 AM No, the 40D should be fine with the 100/2.8 macro.
Title: Re: macro with canon40D Post by: marcfs on January 10, 2010, 03:11:02 PM Longer macros allow the camera/lens to be further away from subject.

But I prefer the longer focal lengths because when auto focusing I have noted different critters, including insects, sometimes react to the focusing motor noise and leave the scene or get out of position so I have to refocus. The further away the less problems I've had.

It's around $130 less expensive than the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004XOM3/bobatkinsphotogr).
I've never looked at the Tokina 100/2.8 macro (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B7SGD0/bobatkinsphotogr), but it's currently selling for about $400 rather than $300 If you don't intend to go full frame, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007WK8KS/bobatkinsphotogr) is a very good buy and there's a $30 instant rebate on it until January 16th (2010). Title: Re: macro with canon40D Post by: Drizd on January 12, 2010, 09:22:29 PM Finally I made decision to buy used one, it really cut expenses and give me bigger list of choose.
Any of you want, dissuade not buy used one, camera? Title: Re: macro with canon40D Post by: Bob Atkins on January 12, 2010, 09:30:59 PM Used is fine if you can find one in good condition from a reputable seller and you don't mind buying a lens without a warranty. The Tamron macro comes with a 6 year factory warranty, which is a really good deal. The Canon lenses come with a 1 year warranty.
