The Canon EOS and Photography Forums

So I'm not a "Pro" photographer but I do have a Canon XSi and I bought a T1i for my daughter and I have a pretty good collection of Canon lenses.  What I would like to know is this:  The 2 Canon body's that I have are in the $700 - $800 range or so.  If I were to upgrade to say a 50D  (around $1K) or a 7D (around $1,500) what exactly are the main benefits I would get out of these?  Would the quality of the images be THAT MUCH better than the lesser priced body's.  If I'm using great lenses (i.e. 300mm IS) on my current lens does that offset paying up for a more expensive body.  Again, since I'm not a "Pro" just trying to understand what the precise benefits are for the more expensive body's.  I guess I wouldn't step up from a T1i to a 50D since not that big a difference pricewise but more likely would step up to a 7D.  Any thoughts/comments appreciated.  Thx.

You'd actually see very little improvemnt in image quality, especially if you're not printing larger than maybe 11x14".

The main advantages of the more expensive models are additional features, not image quality. The 7D has all sorts of features. A better AF system, a built in electonic level indicator, microadjustment of AF on a lens by lens basis. Full 1080 HD video, a larger viewfinder, lower noise at high ISO settings and so on. You also get a rear QCD (quick control dial) which is very convenient for quickly changing exposure compensation and a few other things. The 7D also has better sealing against dust and moisture.

If you're just taking normal pictures under normal lighting and making prints up to 8x12 or 11x14, you won't gain anything significant by moving to an EOS 7D.

On the other hand if you're taking pictures in low light, using tracking AF and making 20x30 prints then the 7D will give you better results.

I'd say an upgrade to a 50D wouldn't really be withwhile (the 50D still doesn't have video). For a significant increase in usability and a small increase in image quality you'd really want to upgrade to the EOS 7D (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002NEGTTW/bobatkinsphotogr)

The design goal of the 7D is one of performance and durability for a wider range of situations than the Rebel models and at the same time paying attention to high image quality. The image quality factor is not a reason to upgrade as it would not give much too drool over. However, if quick handling and fast shooting are something you find has kept you from getting some types of shots you take then go for it.
