Title: lightning
Post by: jamisan on September 23, 2010, 04:53:23 PM
Just curoius, would it be possible to burn out an image sensor taking pics of lightning.   My last lightning shoot, I had the shutter open for a 10 sec exposure,100 ISO, night time, and had a, saw the lightning and heard the thunder at the same time.  No harm to my camera that I can tell, but was just wondering.

No. It's not that bright (or at least it doesn't last that long).

Now if you focused the sun onto the sensor for long enough using a big enough and fast enough lens you might be able to do some damage.

However if the lightning hits you, all bets are off.
