Title: Help Setting Custom Feature on Canon 7D
Post by: bmpress on February 24, 2011, 06:47:47 AM
Hi Bob,

I am trying to set my new camera the way it was set on my old 50D. Instead of pressing the shutter button halfway to focus, I prefer to use the AF-ON button. Then the shutter button only trips the camera. I have found that when shooting birds that are stationary, that I can get more shots by not refocusing every time the camera trips.

Anyway, the Canon manual is driving me nuts and I can't seem to get it set right. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You can use the AF ON button to start AF, but you have to change the setting on the 1/2 press shutter from AF and metering start to metering start only

This is done in the C.Fn.IV menu (option 1) Change the setting for shutter button 1/2 press from metering and AF start to metering start only.

Once you've done that, AF-ON will give you AF and 1/2 pressing the shutter buttom will start metering but it won't change the focus.
