Title: Any Rebate for 5Dii?
Post by: DNA on September 14, 2011, 03:32:26 PM
Hi Bob,

Considering to get 5dII, I am waiting for Canon Rebate program.
As previous experience, Canon sometimes provided to get 5D with kit lens 24-105 as $2500-2700 around before the advent of 5Dii.
So I am assumed that Canon provides similar rebate program soon.
Anyway, do you expect if I can get 5dii with 24-105 as 2500-2700 dollars?
Any comment on Canon rebate or promotion expected, appreciated!
thanks.

All bets are off when it comes to rebates this year. Canon really haven't followed their normal pattern. I'd guess this is a cumulative effect involving production problems following the Tsunami earlier this year, the worldwide economic slump and the strength of the Yen vs. the dollar. In early 2010 the Japanese camera makers were getting 91 Yen for every dollar. Today they are getting 77 Yen for every dollar. So they are making about 15% less just due to the shift in exchange rates.

We haven't seen any new Canon products recently either. Typically a new DSLR has been announced in mid-late August. Not this year. I guess there is still time. The rumor mill is always strong, but mostly to attract eyballs to the rumor sites to generate advertising revenue. I'm sure Canon have a bunch of new prototypes in the works, but when we will see them, nobody really knows.

So I don't see any heavy discounting of the 5D MkII anytime soon. I'd be very surprised to see a 5D MkII + 24-105 combination for $2500. The 5D deals were several years ago and prices have been going up, not down. Right now the 5D MkII runs around $2499 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001G5ZTLS/bobatkinsphotogr) and the 24-105 runs around $1065 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AZ57M6/bobatkinsphotogr) and I just don't see a $1000 discount on the pair as being very likely. Even $500 seems unlikely. I could see maybe $250 or so, but I've no idea if any such rebate is being planned this year.

Of course sooner or later there will be a 5D MkIII, and that will drive down the price of the 5D MkII somewhat - but at that point you'll probably want the MkIII anyway.

Just wanted to let you know that if you are thinking about a 5D MkII, wait until after this weekend. Canon haven't said anything and I have no inside information from Canon, but there are a couple of reasons to think that something might happen soon.

One is that a couple of Canadian sites (one is Henry's) are advertsing the 5D MkII at $1999 (Canadian I assume?).

Another is a report of a US store advising a custormer to "wait until after the weekend".

So hold out until next week. There may be a pleasant surprise coming. No promises though!

You can check today's price on Amazon here - EOS 5D MkII (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001G5ZTLS/bobatkinsphotogr) - right now it's still at $2499.

A heavy discount on the 5D MkII might be an indication that the 5D MkIII is going to appear soon. It's not certain, but it's possible.

UPDATE

Looks like the major stores (Adorama, B&H) are listing a $100 instant rebate on the EOS 5D MkII. Not very generous but better than nothing I guess!
