Title: Lens Choice Post by: bsnooopy on June 13, 2012, 05:57:00 PM I am currently using a Canon EOS 50d. My walk around lens is the Canon EF 28-135. In addition I have a Canon EF 70-300 which I would not part with. Great lens for the money. I am considering selling the 28-135 and going with the Canon 18-135 because of the fact that it is a lighter weight lens and from what I have read produces sharper photos. Another plus would be the wider angle. At this time I cannot afford to spend a large amount of money. Would the 18-135 be a good choice for my 50d or should I just hold off perhaps for something like the Tamron 18-270?
I am headed to my first visit to Wyoming and Yellowstone and want to travel as light as I can. I'd say that purely from a focal length coverage and image quality viewpoint, the EF-S 15-85/3.5-5.6 IS USM (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002NEGTTM/bobatkinsphotogr) would seem to be your best option, though at around $735 it's not inexpensive. The advantages of the E-FS 18-135/3.5-5.6 IS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002NEGTT2/bobatkinsphotogr) are that it's less than 1/2 the price and you wouldn't have to swap lenses so often. It's not quite as wide, but that might not really matter much to you since it will be a lot wider than your current 28-135 is. I'm not sure you'd see much difference in sharpness though. With the 28-135 you have a full frame lens, so you're only using the center part of the image and that will tend to give you better edge and corner quality. With the EF-S 18-135 you're using all the image circle of the lens, which only covers a crop sensor.
