New 270 flash
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:27:41 AM »

This looked really interesting until I saw that it did not have an IR focusing light.  Just what we need - a disco flash on steroids!

The lack of IR focus assist in the Speedlight 270EX really surprised me.  I will buy one for it's small size but I hope it is easier to obtain than a spare battery has been for my 5D2. After almost 5 months I still cannot find one of those.

You can find 5D2 batteries on Ebay. Canon brand are $100+ each, but you can find 3rd party batteries (and chargers) much cheaper:

See LP-E6 batteries for EOS 5D MkII on eBay

Thanks, but I see nothing of the real McCoy and I won't buy 3rd party batteries or if it ships from off shore locations like Hong Kong.

Batteries for the 270 are not a problem.  It uses: "Two AA-size/LR6 Alkaline Batteries" as stated on Bob's Page.

ETA:  Oops, misread your post.  However, what I said is true.  As far as your question, new "stuff" is always easier to find than accesories! 8^)

Check the Bay link (above) again. I see quite a few "Genuine Canon USA" batteries, some from "Authorized Canon Dealers" for the 5D MkII. They ship from the USA too.

Problem is that the price is $110-$120, which is a bit steep, especially when the clones are easily available at $20 and under. However the major mail order vendors also have a price around $120-$130 on that battery (but they don't have them in stock...!). I suppose the ones on eBay could be counterfeit, which is why I'd rather pay the $20 for one that's acknowledged as being 3rd party!

I've used 3rd party batteries (purchased via eBay) for years in my 20D/40D/5D etc. and they've never given me any problems. One failed to hold charge after a couple of years, but I don't mind that since it was about 1/5th the price of the "genuine Canon" battery.

Until the Speedlite 270ex flash becomes avaiilable, I will use a small pocketable Sunpak flash (RD 2000).  I purchased  it about 3 months ago and dscovered it worked fine with my 40D but not at all on my 5D2. That was corrected about a month ago after a return to Sunpak's customer service dept.who performed a firmware update on it

On batteries. I abandoned 3rd party battery brands after buying two such batteries fior a camcorder. One battery failed to hold much charge after a year and a second one died altogether in less time.  As to price , I would pay list for a Canon branded battery sold in the US but I refuse to deal with price gougers.
