I would like to purchase a canon macro lens ... Could you share your insights regarding the 60mm VS 100mm... I like to shoot flowers, bugs, etc..
The len will be used on either a Rebel xti or EOS 50d.

The Canon EF-S 60/2.8 Macro USM is smaller, lighter and less expensive than the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM. Both are very sharp. The advantages of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM are: (a) it has full frame coverage, so if you every buy an EOS 5D or 1d series camera, you could use the lens on it. Of course if you never buy a full frame camera, you don't need full frame coverage! (b) it gives you slightly more working distance (distance between the front element and the subject). This can be useful at times either for subjects that might be disturbed (insects perhaps?) or to give you more room to get light on the subject. The advantages of the Canon EF-S 60/2.8 Macro USM are, as I said above) that it's smaller, lighter and cheaper. It's actually about 1/2 the weight of the 100 Macro. At 1:1 (life size) magnification, the EF-S 60/2.8 has about 3.5" between the subject and the front of the lens, while the EF 100/2.8 has about 6". Both are very good lenses. I don't think there is any significant difference in image quality. |

As usual, Bob nails it.
I had the same choice and went with the 60mm. I really waffled between the longer working distance and the cheaper price - which Bob did not allude to, but could be a big factor.
In the end cheapness won, and I am really pleased with the 60mm EF-S. I was amazed at just how small this little lens is. I am very happy with my purchase.

Oops, I see that Bob did mention that the 60 EF-S was cheaper!
Anyway, one other point about the size. It is small enough to easily take along, so you are more likely to have it with you. I have a fanny pack/shoulder bag that fits my Rebel, my 17-85 walk-around, the 70-300IS and the 60mm, which seems to be a pretty good full service kit. The only way to make it smaller would be to sub the 55-250 EF-S for the EF Telephoto.
