Canon PowerShot A720 IS
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:32:42 AM »

Accidently dropped our PowerShot A720 IS when the lens was fully extended.  Don't believe it landed on the lens, but on the side of the cameral.  It has jarred the lens so it doesn't fully retract and close, but seems to work otherwise.  I really like this camera and wonder if I can tinker with the lens extender parts (seems to be 2 cylinder type pieces that need to fit together correctly.  I understand you can purchase optional lenses.  So, I assume there are instructions to remove the outer lens to replace the lens if you want to.  I'm looking for the instructions to allow me to remove the outer lense pieces and hopefully reinstall it again to fix the problem.  Do you know where I can find the instructions for this operation?

The accessory lenses fit over the existing lens assembly, they don't replace it. The original lens assembly is not removable.

Basically you have to take the camera completely apart to get at the lens assembly and that's not something most users would be able to do. As far as I know there are no disassembly manuals available, so you'd have to "play it by ear" when taking it apart and that's no easy if you have no experience with camera repair.

Here's a link to a video on how to get the camera apart to replace the LCD, but you'd have to dig a little deeper into the camera to get to the lens.
