I passed the question of trigger voltages to the publishers of EOS magazine, a highly respected journal in the UK,  quoting Chuck.  This was their reply which ties in with Keith's post.
"Chuck Westfall is a reliable source of information and I go with his advice. Except that I would avoid flashguns with a 250 volt trigger voltage. Even if this does not damage the camera electronics, the spark generated across the make-and-break contacts is likely to reduce their working life.
If I was using the Metz gun you mention I would either fit the Wien Safe Sync or use a wireless remote trigger."

Hmm. I'm not so sure.

As far as I know, the flash circuitry in all modern cameras (and certainly all current EOS cameras) is electronic, not mechanical. There is no make-and-beak contact, there is no spark and there is no wear. Switching is done via solid state circuitry. Older cameras used mechanical contacts, in which case there could be sparking and errosion on contacts. With electronic switching there is no spark and there is no wear. There would therefore be no real reason to limit sync voltage to less than that specified as safe by Canon.
