7D firmware upgrades
« on: July 03, 2012, 07:47:17 AM »

Sounds like they are trying to keep the 7D firmly above the T4i in the pecking order...

After all, most of these upgrades are already on my T3i.

That's certainly true. Though with the upgraded T4i having the AF from the 60D, the 60D is probably in more trouble than the 7D.

What would seem logical would be to upgrade the 60D with the AF from the 7D and upgrade the 7D with the AF from the 5D MkIII, along with new sensors and continuous AF during video. That still keeps a significant difference between all the models in the T4i -> eos 60D MkII -> EOS 7D MkII -> EOS 5D MkIII chain. Both the 60D and 7D upgrades would use the Digic 5 processor too.

However I'm not sure Canon currently have the capacity for two more new cameras (60D/70D and 7D/7D MkII) right now. They've been having trouble getting the 1D-X to the market along with their new super telephotos. The 200-400/4L IS Extender still isn't commercially available. And I presume they are still working on their new mirrorless camera which has to be in the pipeline for announcement soon.

So I'd see the 7D firmware update as something of a stopgap measure. It's the best they can do with the resources they have on hand. Without the new sensor with phase sensitive AF zones, they can't do continuous movie AF via firmware and they really can't do much about higher ISO noise and dynamic range. They also can't provide functions which are hardwired into the Digic 5 processor.
