EOS 7D vs EOS 50D vs EOS 5D MkII comparison- which one to choose?
« on: September 07, 2009, 02:24:37 PM »

Bob,

Very helpful and informative article on evaluating the list of current Canon camera body alternatives below the one series.  I’m looking forward to learning the advantage provided by the focusing system of the 7D versus the other alternatives.  I’m shooting with the 40D and the 20D is a back-up.

When I am capturing birds with a 500 and 1.4 extender, I always notice that there is a lag in “focus lock” versus photographers using a 1 series camera and the same or greater lens combination.   I hope that the 7D’s combination of the dual digic 4, new AF zones/combinations, etc provide focus lock advantage.

I also anticipate that the 7D increased pixel count will yield a noticeable difference in IQ versus the 40D and 20D, especially when creating larger prints.  The greater pixel count will also create advantage when cropping.

When do you think Canon will issue a 7D white paper?  Will you publish a link to the white paper?

Regards,

Marc

Canon have recently been doing white papers (long technical descriptions) on most new DSLRs,so I'd expect to see one on the 7D at some point. I don't know when though. If I see it published I'll certainly post a link.

I presume the higher pixel count will be an improvement over the 20D, less so with the 40D and less so again with the 50D. Any advantage will certainly be more evident in really large prints than in small or medium sized prints.

Will the new AF system equal that of the 1D series cameras? I don't know. Canon had their problems with servo AF on the 1D MkIII when shooting at high frame rates. Whether they have learned things from that experience that they have incorporated into the 7D AF system I don't know.

Bob,

Thanks for your speedy response and insight.  Time will tell how the 7D compares with the other Canon cameras.  I look forward to your test results.

I currently own a 5D2 and the type of shooting you do is not it's calling. Like all Canon's models below the ID seies, autofocus lock is rated to be sensitive to f/5.6 apertures and larger while the ID model line is f/8. Maybe that is why you are having locking focus issues. You didn't say what lens you were using other than it was a 500 mm.

I am intending to buy the 7d when available and retiire a 40d. After reading the 7d manual online it becomes apparent that Canon put a lot of effort into autofocus in this new model and it's new class of camera. A lot of the manual's pages are devoted to it's autofocus ability. I'm not sure if the 7D will live up to autofocus tracking expectations  but and I expect Rob Galbraight will try his best to disparage it. I have a hard time understanding why his take seems so important to Canon as he is a champion Canon critic
