best (for $1k) and easiest-to-carry lens for 50D for Galapagos

Going to Galapagos in end of June.  Have an 50D.  Have been using a Tamron 28-300 XR which I bought in 2004/2005; main reason being, I am not good in changing lens.  Would like to buy to a better "all-purpose" lens for Galapogos trip.  Budget, less than $1k.  Which one should I buy?  Should I increase the budget a bit to get a better lens?

Better yet, is an "all-purpose" lens good for Galapagos?  I want to get some really good if not great pictures with this once-a-long-while trip.  Should I go for two, one being wide angle, and one for zoom?  If so, which two should I get, same budget? or with a little more budget?

Definitely a worthwhile read. 

I'd think about adding a lens with IS.  Being able to get close to the subject will help the image when shooting in harsh light.  You can also look at Artie Morris's website http://www.birdsasart.com and search the bulletin archive for Galapagos.  Artie shows what and how he captured his terrific images over many years of trips to the Galapagos.
