Canon EOS 5D Mark III : file name user settings (setup, menu 1)
« on: October 17, 2012, 03:53:42 AM »

Hello,
According to the manual (pages 152 and 153), it is possible to register a custom file name of 4 or 3 letters or numbers, combined or not. I tried to do so(eg "EOS5" in setting 1, "EOS" in setting 2), but after having taken a picture with one of these settings, although on the camera menu the new name appeared correctly, when I read on a computer the card where the file is, its name is starting by an underscore instead of the first letter "_OS5" or "_OS". And this in user settings 1 or 2 and even the default file name "BN1A" if I choose this setting is coming "_N1A". Could you explain me if I misunderstood something or where is my mistake.
Thank you very much.

You probably have the camera set to Adobe RGB color space. When you do that the first character of the filename becomes an underscore character.

Try setting color space back to sRGB and you should see the full file names.

It's a feature to alert you that you've changes color space.

Hello,
Thank you very much, it was exactly that.
Is it a way to disable this warning?
Thanks again.

No, you can't change the initial underscore on Adobe RGB files. However there are lots of programs that will allow you to rename the files once they have been transferred to your PC. You could put back the initial letter or change the name to something longer and more descriptive.

Canon's free DPP software can do the renaming. There are also lots of 3rd party utilities that can do it, for example http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

Hi,
Thank you very much. You are so good!
I had asked, before coming to this forum, the question to Canon UK and did not succeed to have an answer.
Thanks,
Michel
