I have the Canon 40D and it is set to L + RAW - I am using SanDisk Extreme IV 4GB cards.
I just took a large number of exposures and when I look at the files on the card I generally see both the RAW and jpg IMG numbers together.
But, twice on the card I only have jpg and not the matching RAW file, i.ie., IMG_1585 is both, but IMG_1586, 1587, 1588 and 1749, 1750, 1751 have only the jpg.
While I was shooting, I did delete some images that I didn't like but those deletions are not the ones that "left behind" the jpg files.
Is this a "camera" issue or a "card" issue? Have you seen this before?
Thanks

Typically, the cause of this is switching between the "creative" modes and the "program" modes.
RAW only works in DEP, M, Av, Tv and P. If you switch to the green square, landscape, portrait, sports etc (the modes on the "other" side of the control dial), images are only saved as JPEGs.
This is described in the manual I think, but many people miss it.

Bingo! I was in Time Square at night and did switch to the Creative just to see if I would get better results - I usually stay in the Program (P) mode. The second time it happened I took a couple of shots in my hotel room just to document the room setting and used the "green" mode.
Thanks for pointing that out. And, yes, the manual was in the bag, but I had only looked at it once to see what suggestions I could get on metering in Time Square - its almost daylight at midnight out there! Never thought to look at RAW information.
