Moving to 5D

Howdy,

I've been shooting with a 3-year old Rebel XT and am looking at the 5D. Will my Rebel XT lenses be compatible with the 5D?

I have a Canon EFS 17-85mm IS, Sigma 70-300 APO DG, and a TamronSP AF Di 17-25mm.

I made the same move recently.
Actually I just received my new 5D with 24/105 f/4 today.
It feels much better than my Rebel XT.
In fact, it reminds me of my old Elan 7 film camera.
The Rebel XT body is just too small, even for small hands such as mine.
I have to purchase the grip for Rebel XT in order to use it effectively with the 70-200 f/4 IS.

Your Canon EF-S lens is not compatible with 5D, but your Sigma lens should work fine with the 5D.
I'm not sure about your Tamron.
Are you sure it's the correct model name?

Tamron Di series lenses will be fine on an EOS 5D. Di stands for "Digitally Integrated", meaning they are optimized for use on digital cameras, but they cover a full 35mm frame. There isn't a 17-25 Di as far as I know, but as long as it's a Di lens, not a DiII lens, it will be Ok whatever the focal length range is (I'd guess it's the 17-35).

Tamron DiII lenses are designed only to cover an APS-C sized sensor such as is found in the Digital Rebel series cameras and the 10D/20D/30D/40D. DiII lenses can physically be mounted on a 5D, but the carners of the image will be dark, or if not dark the image quality will be low.

Canon EF-S lenses will not mount on an EOS 5D. They are mechanically incompatible and they are only designed to cover the smaller APS-C digital sensor, so even if you could mout it, the image corners would be dark/soft. There would also be a danger of the 5D mirrior hitting the back of the lens if the lens was zoomed to 17mm.

The Sigma lens should be OK on a 5D.

I also just made that same move and could not be more pleased.  I did not get the kit at the time, but looking back, I probably should have...  Either way, I can tell you that shooting with this camera has enriched my hobby in a huge way.  I could not be more pleased.

I'd echo the thought that you consider the 5D + EF 24-105/4L IS USM kit.

The 24-105 will take the place of the 17-85IS that you have now. In fact it will give you a wider field of view at 24mm than your 17-85 does on your XT at 17mm. It's a great lens and if you buy it as part of the kit you save about $350 on it. That's basically what I did. I still have the 17-85 for use on my 40D.
