I recently bought EOS XSi kits and EF-S 55-250 lens and was quite happy with the combination. But until yesterday, I noticed something strange and can't explain. As a test, I zoomed the lens to tele-end and shot a picture frame (about 12X10) in door. After several shots, I noticed that the actual photo (viewed on LCD) were always off-centered, which is one side cut off some but the other side has extra space. At the beginning, I thought I probably did not aim right. But as I continued shooting, the results were same. No matter how I put the frame in the whole viewfinder, the pictures were always off centered. Until I intentionally shot off-centered in viewfinder, then I got a perfectly centered picture on LCD. I wonder if anyone noticed this? Is this a lens or camera defect or an inherent problem of EF-S 55-250 lens? By the way, I bought my EF-S 55-250 lens from BestBuy. They want $350 but I asked them to match Wolf Camera's price, which $300. They have quite a few in stock.

If other lenses don't show this problem, then it's unlikely that the camera is at fault. If all lenses show it, it would suggest a reflex mirror misalignment. I'm assuming you see the same thing on your monitor as you do on the LCD screen, since the LCD is supposed to give a 100% view.
If it's just that one lens, it could be caused by an offset in the optical axis of the lens due to element misalignment. If you suspect that's true, the best course of action would be to return it to the store and exchange it. Canon should look at it and fix it under warranty if they find a problem, but it would be quicker to exchange it if you can.
When I had the 55-250 to test I didn't notice any problem, though I'll admit I didn't really look for one. If it was a small offset I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Is the IS on or off? It could be that the IS is locked all the way to one side.
Use the telephoto mode with IS on and off, is it working? At 250 mm, it should be pretty obvious that the IS is working while looking through the viewfinder.

I keep IS on all the time. Just talk to Canon USA and was told most likely is that camera reflecting mirror misaligned. I sent the camera to Canon Service for checking and repair.
