Hi, I have a canon 18-55 EF-S USM IS lens on a 50 D body - 6 weeks old.
I have tried to manually focus this lens and if you even put your finger on the focussing ring, the focus jumps. I have found also that when in 'sports' mode, the photos are predominantly blurred. I did some troubleshooting this morning and shot 25 shots, all on sports mode, 1/400 th, ISO 100, 20 mm, f4.5, AI Servo AF. 19 are blurred, 6 are sharp. 12 of them are with IS turned on and the shutter changed itself to 1/125th with f 8.0. Only 2 of these are sharp. When I say trial, I mean I had a static subject and panned very slowly from right to left. I am wondering if I could ask for some advice. Do I have a faulty technique, lens or camera?

Well, I am far from an expert but I would set the camera in the "P" mode ,continuous shoot, and take the same shots. Where do you have the auto focus point selection, manual or automatic. The focus jumping does not sound good. I assume the auto focus works ok?

Hi Jamisan, I have given it a try. I am think that the lens is faulty. I get snappy, sharp images with a prime, change to the zoom and it is just a haze. I will get back to the supplier and return the lens. Thanks for the post.
