Hi all, I have just found this forum, after hours of trawling the net for a good one I hope someone can please help me? I have a canon eos 450d, and it has been working perfectly up until a few days ago. Normally when I take a photo in semi darkness the flash either flashes once or twice. But recently it has started continuously flashing I have a horrible feeling that this might be due to an incorrect data cable being used to upload pictures to my pc. Does anyone know if a standard usb cable is ok to use? THank you very much Mike

The multiple flashes are probably the autofocus illuminator. To get focus when it's dark the 450D stobes its built in flash. It's perfectly normal. If the picture looks OK, don't worry. Though the USB cable is very unlikely to be your problem, I think it's a standard cable (USB type A male to USB 5-pin mini male). If you want the Canon part, ADORAMA sell them.

yes, thankyou for replying,
although my girlfriend believes I have fried her camera because I did not use the correct cable!!!!
We do have the original canon cable, but could not find it at that the time, so I simply used a normal usb cable.
I will let her know that the rapid flashes are ok.
Although it would be great if someone could 100% clarify for me that a standard usb cable will work.
Cheers
Mike

I have an assortment of cables to fit different student cameras--I am the yearbook adviser at a high school--and I buy them cheap off EBay when we lose one. As long as they fit the camera connector, then I have not seen any difference in performance.
Admit you were wrong and promise never to do it again.
Peace in your lifetime, Mitch

I am using cables from my pocket pc, external hard drive, whatever is nearest to me and has never encountered any problem. I have lots of these so I keep one almost wherever I go (office, bag, house living room, bedroom, not in the toilet though ). Hope that helps.
