Matching a DSLR to an NP101
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:55:54 AM »

Bob this is one for your I think.  I want to use my Televue NP101 as a long focus lens for my 40D.  I have the T ring, and the extension tube.  I am using the Gibralter mount so vibration is not an issue.  I also want to use a 4x 2inch Powermate.  The subjects will be birds.  I realise that this is a bit over the top but some of the images on the Televue web site are rather good.

Have you tried this and if so do you have any advice.

Thanks

Should work fine. I've used my Genesis (500mm f5) as a lens with good success. It's every bit as good as a Canon 500mm lens, though it's longer, heavier, manual focus only and you only have one aperture. I use a 500mm lens now, but the Genesis (and I presume the NP101) is optically just as good (if not better at infinity focus).

For those who don't know what a Genesis and NP101 are, they are refractor telescopes made by the TeleVue corporation. The Genesis is a 500mm f5 4-element design including a fluorite element. The NP101 is a very similar design, but is 540mm and f5.4.

With any long lens using mirror lock up and a remote release can help.

Can you use Mirror Lock-up and remote release for birds?  8^)
