Lenses for Canon 50D

I am getting ready to purchase the Canon 50D and reading a number of articles I have noticed that most opinion is that one would need to have "L" series lenses for optimum performance on this camera.  The lenses that I currently own are not L series but all are Canon.  I have the Canon 28-135 IS, 18 - 55 and the 70-300 IS.  Would I get better results using these lenses on the new Rebel T1i or should I go for the 50D?  I have been saving for months to make this purchase and want to make the best decision so that I don't have to buy another camera for a few years. 

My primary reason for choosing the 50D over the Rebel is the faster frame rate.  I also would not have much use for the video feature on the new Rebel T1i.
 
Any insight on this is greatly appreciated.

I think 2 of those lenses are alright.
I would prefer to replace the 18-55 with fast zoom or wide+portrait lens, given there's no fast lens/zoom there.
The replacement must be wide enough and or fast enough to complement those two.

In my view, the option would be one of these :
1. Tokina 12-24/4 and 50/1.8 (to get more wide advantage and fast portrait)
2. 17-40/4 L and 50/1.8 (if the budget is not limiting)
3. Tamron 17-50 (much cheaper, be sure to get a good copy)
 
If 18-55 (I assume it IS version) serves you well and you're satisfied with it, then I would add a fast prime, either cheap 50/1.8 or 50/1.4

The sensors are the same size. In fact they may be the same sensor, so image quality will probably be very similar. The 50D has higher ISO capability, a faster frame rate, better ergonomics with the rear Quick Control Dial and dual LCD display, but the T1i has video capability.

So it really depends. If you do a lot of low light shooting and/or sports action, the 50D would be better. If you want to shoot videos, you'll need the T1i. Basically unless you want to shoot video, I'd go with the EOS 50D.

Try the lenses you have and see how you like them. If you wanted another lens, I'd look at the  EF-S 17-55/2.8IS USM. With that and the EF 70-300/4-5.6IS USM you'd have a pretty good lens kit and you probably wouldn't miss the 56-69mm gap.

Right, I forgot 17-55is, that must be ideal.
My wishlist too, unfortunately that's beyond budget so I have to settle with Tamron 17-50.

i had been using a 17-85 IS with my 40d,
when I changed to the 50d, I discovered the pictures produced were super sharp. I thought I'd have to upgrade to L,
but with the results I'm getting, I guess the L can wait a little longer...and I didn't even have to play with the af microadjust..

I like the 70-300 on my 50D. Of course, I would rather have a 100-400L, but the 70-300 is very good for a third of the price.  On the shorter end I never got the satisfaction out of a few zooms I tried until I picked up the 24-105L.  I would either go with the 17-55 F2.8 or the 24-105L. You can either have the added speed or the added range depending on your needs.
