Topic: Pitted lens glass (Read 9462 times)

Canon 70-300mm IS USM bought used. The front glass appears to be pitted,thought it was just dirty but, cleaned and still there.Didnt notice till I was in bright sun light. Is there a place I can the glass or should I send to an expert for repairs. Anyone know an extimated price for this?

If it really is pitted you might get more flare (and lower contrast) under some lighting conditions, but resolution shouldn't be affected. The only cure for pitting would be the replacement of the front element of the lens. A wild guess at what Canon might charge for that would be maybe $150?
The only way to get a firm price would be to send it back to Canon for a repair estimate. If it turns out not to be pitted but just dirty, they'd tell you.

Well, It doesn't feel pitted. If it is dirt it's on the inside. Don't really know if IQ is affected because this is the only 70-300 I have taken photos with.

It wouldn't be unusual for there to be a few dust particles stuck on the back of the front element. Most people don't worry about them. If you look closely through the lens I'm sure you'll see more! Generally they cause no problems. Even if you had Canon try to clean them all out, they'd get back in since the lens isn't hermeticallt sealed and air moves in and out of the lens when you zoom it.
