Full frame lens use with DX sensor (Nikon)
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:56:13 AM »

I am currently using a DX format Nikon, and own three DX lenses. I might consider purchasing a full size sensor Nikon in the future. If I purchase more lenses first, should I preferentially but lenses designed for the full frame sensors? Can these be used with my current camera body, and will there be any adverse effects on images. I consider myself an advanced novice and have no immediate plans to purchase any additional camera bodies. Thanks John

I'm not a Nikon expert, but just like in the Canon system, full frame lenses can be used on any Nikon DSLR camera, full frame or crop sensor.

If you intended to go to a full frame camera in the near future, it certainly makes sense to but full frame lenses, unless no suitable lens is available. If you need a superwideangle zoom for a crop sensor camera for example, the only lenses with a short enough focal length are those designed for crop sensor use. Other than that though, full frame lenses are usually available in all focal lengths.

Thank you for the prompt response. This is what I had suspected, but wanted to clarify. Now I will have to determine how important it would be to me to migrate to a full frame sensor, or as you do, have two bodies, one of each kind. John Hartman
