I have a 5D mark ii that I use for landscapes and shots where the full frame coverage is important. But use a 1d mark ii for action shots and sports photography because of the fast 8 fps and better autofocus than the mark ii.
I'm thinking of selling the 1d and replacing it with a 7D. Does anyone know how the quality of the AF, especially for fast moving subjects, compares? Are there any downsides to the 7D vs the 1D (besides the 1.6 vs. 1.3)?

I don't think anyone has yet had the chance to evaluate the AF performance of the new EOS 7D. I'm sure that will happen as soon as production models are available for testing and I hope to have one to evaluate sometime this month.
I think the 1d MkII will AF with lenses up to f8 (e.g. an f4 lens with a 2x TC), while the 7D will only AF up to f5.6 (e.g an f4 lens with a 1.4x but not a 2x TC)

I’m looking forward to learning how the 7D auto focus performs.
My perception is that the prosumer cameras have not had auto focus systems equal to 1 series cameras. I think I recall reading on Rob Galbraith’s site that the 1DMIIN focused as good/better then the 1DMIII.
If the 7D focused at the 1DMII level or better, it would certainly exceed my expectations.

What is the difference in pixel size? Do you know if the 7D inferior because the sensor is smaller?

Rob Galbraith has an article on a 7D pre-production sample and comments on both image quality and autofocus after some 200 images were taken. It's worth a read and looks promising

Camerabuff I am going to get a 7D to be a companion to a 5D2. Like you , I have been searching for bits of info,. Below is a link to a nature photographer who spent 4 hours with a beta 7D. He was impressed with it's focus accuracy and speed. Check it out. http://www.naturfokus.info/EN/
